a perfectly low-key vday date.

my husband (johan) and i have never gone out on valentines day.  when we started dating we were both in school and i was a single mom so baby sitters were hard to come by (or afford).  later after we married, johan waited tables and the tips were too good to pass up.  now and days we still opt for a cozy night in after the kids are down instead of fighting the crowd of fellow love bird.

regardless of where or when you celebrate valentines day, i think it’s still fun to include small festive touches…. no need to go overboard, unless of course that’s how you roll!

here are few things we couldn’t celebrate without…perfect-vday-date-1

1. something sweet and chocolatey.  this year we will be chowing down on devil’s food cake with buttercream frosting.  hint: to punch up a box mix, add a cup of chocolate chips to the batter!

2. a love themed playlist.  try starting with more upbeat songs in the beginning and slow things down towards the end…  always a good way to set the mood (wink, wink).

here are a few tracks that will be on our playlist if you would like some ideas: sadie hawkins dance – by reliant k, the gambler – by fun., beautiful girls – boyce avenue, sort of – by ingrid michaelson, i won’t give up – by jason mraz, bottom of the sea – by matt nathanson, all the pennies – by mindy gledhill, i will wait – by mumford & sons, she is love – by parachute, you are the best thing – by ray LaMontagne, my sweet darling – by seth kallen & the reaction.

3. a cute card (like this one from HEN & CO.) and handwritten note.

4. kissable lips.  have you tried MAC’s cremesheen glass lip color?  it’s not sticky like their other kind

perfect-vday-date-2we would love to hear (in the comments below) how you celebrate valentines day without the babes and one song (or more) you would add to your playlist!

just one week to go!

Hi there, I’m fairly new to your site, and I love it! I love your designs too, they are very “me.” 🙂
Today I read you were a single mom when you met your husband, and I didn’t know that. I was too! I already had a son when I met my husband, and I remember how date nights were hard as a single mom. My oldest boy is now in Junior High.

Anyway we have been married almost 7 years now and we have added three more kids to our family. We have 3 boys and 1 girl. We never go out on Valentine’s Day either. I’m not too wild about the crowds, and I like to make it special for us at home. 🙂

Thanks for all your great printables, your site and shop is great!

oh, i’m so glad you shared! sounds like we’ve lived almost paralleled lives, lol! 7 years married, oldest is also in middle school with 3 younger siblings (including 1 girl)…. crazy!

thanks so much for your note and encouragement!

    Love your blog!

We have an 18 month old now, so we do not go out on Valentine’s Day. We like a bottle of wine and our wedding soundtrack (lots of Nat King Cole). We also love to play cards!
