SoCal or bust (traveling with kids)

going-back-to-cali-2
eeeek.  i’m so excited (& i just can’t hide it).  in a few weeks i’ll be boarding a plane with my little traveling companion (tilly), and heading to sunny los angeles to visit my bestie (sadie) and her family and attend her soon-to-be 13 year old daughter’s bat mitzvah.

after the celebration, we’ll have several days to fill with fun.  you can bet we’ll be taking advantage of the hotel pool, beach communities (maybe a bike ride or two), and outdoor living in general, but other than that, i’m not sure what we’ll put on the itinerary.

i’d love to hear your suggestions for things to do, places to eat, etc.  just one stipulation….  no disney land.  we’ll be saving that for a time when the entire fam bam can join us.

while i can hardly wait to arrive in LA, i also think that the pre-trip activities (planning, packing, shopping, & anticipation) are almost as fun as the trip itself.  don’t you agree?

do you have any trips you’re looking forward to this summer?

let the festivities begin!  happy monday!

I highly recommend this place in Manhattan Beach for yummy treats http://mbcreamery.com/Home.html. If you’re up for a drive, there is a beautiful arboretum just outside of Pasadena http://www.arboretum.org/index.php/visit/ . I could spend a whole day there!

We’re going to Texas to see my family and friends before our crew move to Morocco this Fall…we are so excited about our adventure but will definitely miss home. Preparing is half the fun like you said, I don’t know why, but it’s so fun for me to buy snacks and activities for the kids to do on the plane, I love me a fresh box of crayola crayons and Melissa and Doug have incredible sticker pads! As far as LA, lucky…I’ve heard L.A. has some wicked good food trucks, you can’t leave til you’ve tried at least one. Have fun, be safe.

Pasadena is great! If you’re there, then you have to go to the Huntington Library-and you aren’t going there for the books! The gardens are spectacular. The Japanese Gardens are so awesome they filmed Memoirs of Geisha there.

As much as I love LA, there are other beach cities to explore. Instead of just mentioning Venice Beach and the totally amazing residential architecture there (Frank Gehry started there!), you should also take PCH until it ends in Palos Verdes. The drive around Palos Verdes is amazing! There is the new Trump Golf course, but besides that are great places to pull off and check out beaches you have to hike down to. You might even see whales migrating! PV, as locals call it, is also loaded with tons of hiking trails and there is a great outdoor mall if you want to take a break, too.

Long Beach Aquarium of the Sea is truly amazing! If you do a day drive, why not stop by there?

So I’m a native SoCal girl and my heart loves too many places to mention–but a trip to Newport Beach and a walk along the totally expansive, typically quiet, beaches are amazing. Start in Balboa and work your way North toward the pier. You’ll pass a beautiful elementary school, right on the beach, with a great outdoor playground-free for all to enjoy!

Lastly, a bit further south is Crystal Cove Beach. You’d have to drive from Balboa through Del Mar, but take a stop in one of the neighborhoods that are nestled along the coast to glimpse $20 million homes! You’ll also drive past Fashion Island Outdoor Mall. A good stop for typical retail shops like Pottery Barn and Neiman Marcus, but there are beautiful water fountains and awesome landscaping.

Okay, I derailed a bit! Crystal Cove Beach is a great place for families to enjoy tide pools. Time your visit for low tide and you’ll be set. It is so lovely and beautiful there that you could make an entire day out of it!

Wow! This is the longest comment in history but I love where the places where I grew up!!

Have fun!! California is that amazing!!

PS: I can’t rave enough about THE SPREAD! We are loving the recipes so much as a family. I have tons of cookbooks but this format and the actual recipes are perfect. You are genius!
