stay cool goodie bags

a few weeks ago we had that unusual pacific northwest experience of a heat wave – that’s right, the temp. hit 90, with 80% humidity. and while most of the country would probably consider this kind of weather lovely for summer – my children actually thought they were melting.

to distract everyone from the heat, i thought it would be fun to put together little “stay cool” bags for the kids to hand out to their friends.  we ran to the store to grab mini spray bottles (squirt guns could have been fun too), water balloons, travel size sunscreen, sunglasses, and a bundle of dollar bills for the ice cream truck.

(little side note – the sunglasses were a little spendy so we purchased one pair and then went home and ordered a dozen from the oriental trading company.)

our heat wave only lasted a few days, and has yet to return, so for now our bags are hanging out in my office, waiting for a good time to be delivered.  of course, this could be a while, but when it happens, we will be ready! and if not, we have some birthdays coming up, where they can be handed out as really cute party favors!

stay-cool-bag-how-toTo download the instructions and “stay cool” tags, click the image above.  (my mom was sweet enough to make the drawstring bags out of some of the fabric in our shop. how cute are they?)

so…how do you keep the kids cool on hot days!?  what would your kids want to stick in the bags to make them heat-wave friendly?

5 minutes of fame (literally)

if you’ve stopped by any of the armommy homefronts over the last week, you may have heard that we were on a DIY segment for our local Seattle morning show, new day northwest.  if you haven’t seen it yet, the video is below….  (for a special treat – pay close attention to tilly and what she does with the paintbrush in her hands at around minute 4:45.  oh Tilly…)

we had such a great time and i kinda wish it was something we did every week!

of course being on TV was fun, but the best part was having the entire fam bam there, including my husband, mom, kidlets, and brother-in-law, i was also so lucky that my uber-talented chic friend, stacy joined us to take beautiful pictures capturing behind the scenes moments from the show.  i thought it would be fun to share some of the pics with you – so excuse me while i relive all of the fun we had (and post a borderline embarrassing amount of pictures of myself).

(here is the brood post-segment. it was the last pic taken of the day, but since it so wonderfully encompasses the happy crew, it feels like a good place to start. left to right: gamma jane, espen, griffin, johan, me, ozzie, tilly, and uncle mark.  a fun side note, we took this picture in front of the sound stage for almost live – which was a local comedy show i used to watch as a kid.)

armommy-new-day-102

(the first thing we did upon arrival was set up backstage.  anytime i’ve seen or been apart of a production like this, i’m blown away with how much goes into it. so many people and moving parts!)

(here i am meeting the host, meeghan black.  she was incredible to work with and made me feel right at home on stage.)

(…then mostly playing instead.)

armommy-new-day-118(and then back to camera readiness…getting makeup done in a director’s chair feels like serious business!)

armommy-new-day-134

(ready on set…  around this time i am relaxing and hoping i don’t have that awkward morning show segment smile some people get.)

(chatting with the audience for a few quick minutes, while my kids hung all over me, was one of my favorite parts.)

(the armommy gals! thanks mom for being such a great sport and showing off your mad fort building skills!)

so there you have it, a glimpse into our big day!  having a day like this was one of those things i dreamt about doing from the time we started our little company…. it never ceases to amaze me when those seemingly impossible and random dreams come true.

have you ever had a time in your life where you paused and realized that you had made it to a moment you had only dreamed about achieving? was it everything you expected it to be or less/more?

griffey is two (cool)

to the (coolest) birthday boy,

i’ve been a mom long enough to know that these toddler days fly by, but this time around it seems more like lightning speed.

(here come the waterworks!)

a few things i (especially) adore about you at 2…

you are the only one with your daddies eyes and every time you smile, with those front teeth, and big gap, and one dimple, i kinda want to eat you.

you love music and have some rad dance moves that you show off at least a couple times a day.

you have the pickiest palette, (but we are working on it) and recently started glaring at me when we aren’t in agreement.

you only have a few words, but the ones you have, you use well. the day you start speaking in sentences i’m pretty sure we’re all in trouble.

you are greatly loved.

and very good at loving back.

play dates and picnics

before i begin this post, just want to say thanks you so much for all the sweet and encouraging comments regarding our morning show segment – you guys are the best!

——————————————————————————————————–

a few weeks ago, before the summer sunshine had made it’s way to the PNW, i got together with my friends trina (and her two littles – audrey & fin) and kim (who took all these great snaps!) for a picnic play date and test run of our new snack bags.

play-date-picnic-10

the rain was an issue, so we planned on bringing the picnic indoors but ended up turning a boat over and sticking it under a tree – problem solved – no wet hineys!

play-date-picnic-16

play dates are like a life line – “want to phone a friend!?” – don’t you think?  especially durning the summer months, so i thought it would be fun to share our calling cards as a free printable (play date cards and work for hire and babysitting cards for older kids to usetoo!).

links to  D O W N L O A D  are at the bottom of this post.

play-date-picnic-19

the girls were especially  s p i r i t e d  (ehem) that day so in addition to snack bag pics, kim took a generous amount of fun outtakes…

play-date-picnic-18

the boys, on the other hand, were super chill.

(these two are sorta made for each other – audrey and tilly – so cray)

(ozzie had recently taught us a funny hand jive about lamas, a moose and an awkward turtle.  it only felt right to pass it along to friends)

(oh, have you guys tried honest kids juice pouches!? they are amazing and have half the sugar.  i picked these up at traget, but i’m sure they have them at other stores)

picnic-tote-bag-2

(a picnic tote bag {with leather stripe} my mom put together that i’ve been using for almost all of our summer outings lately…  we’ll share a tutorial soon.  thanks mama!)

now for the calling cards!  click on the links to download:

// have your people call my people, boy // have your people call my people, girl // let’s play // word bubble, boy // word bubble, girl // yard work // babysitting //

we also have some cute cards for us mamas, but the file was too big to upload, so feel free to email me and i’ll send you the file (rae at armommy dot com).

happy friday!
